Who Wants That Perfect Love Story Anyway

I slept like a baby in Kamo’s arms. He held me so close, I couldn’t even move but I loved it. I dreamed about this every night as I laid in my bunk. He smelled so good, even his morning breath was intoxicating. Kadijah didn’t say anything after we emerged from the bathroom but I could tell she was happy for us. We awoke early, dressed, ate breakfast, and hit the road. It was a four hour drive home and I couldn’t wait to see the house Kamo brought for us. Kadijah helped him pick out the furniture so she couldn’t wait to see if I liked it.

“ You still like red, right?” she asked.

“Naw, that shit wack,” I lied. The look on her face was priceless I couldn't help but laugh.

“ I can't stand your ass,” she laughed and punched me in the arm.

I called my grandmother to let her know I wouldn’t be staying with her. She was a little disappointed but she was happy for me. Yaya, which was what I called her, was as cool as they came. She was my rock. She worked at the post office since she was 18 and had recently retired. She was the only person in our family to own a house outright. Her second husband died 10 years ago and she used his life insurance to pay it off. She was all alone in that big ole house so she was looking forward to some company.

I also called my momma to let her know I was out. She didn’t sound too happy for me but I didn’t care. My mother was always a hater so I wasn’t gonna let her ruin my day.

We were a few hours into our drive.

I sat up front with my baby, singing and talking his head off while Kadijah slept. I didn’t understand why she was so tired, we’d only been up a few hours.

“Damn baby, your sister is knocked the fuck out!” I turned the radio down so he could hear me.

“That’s all pregnant people do is eat and sleep!”

“Pregnant, who’s pregnant?” I knew for a fact that Kadijah wasn’t pregnant, she would’ve told me.

Kamo looked surprised by my question. He looked in the rearview mirror at his sister but she was knocked out. When he realized that I wasn’t joking, he just shook his head. “She didn’t tell you?”

“Hell naw, are you serious?” I couldn’t believe Kadijah. It seemed Kamo wasn’t the only one keeping shit from me. Why wouldn’t she tell me? Why was everyone treating me like I couldn’t handle shit? My whole demeanor changed and Kamo sensed it.

“Look, she’s been acting real sketchy lately. I don’t know why she ain’t tell you about the baby but don’t put that shit on me. I just got out the doghouse, I ain’t tryna go back,” Kamo joked. He leaned over and kissed me, almost causing an accident. “A nigga willing to die for you Ke,” we both laughed.
